Top Tennessee Communities
By Chris Dortch
It isn’t in Tennessee, but Canyon Ridge Club in Rising Fawn, Georgia, is so close to Chattanooga it’s a member of the Chattanooga District Golf Association, reason enough for its inclusion here. The community sits high atop Lookout Mountain, and its focal point is a beautiful, challenging golf course designed by Rick Robbins, who says the uniqueness of the property drew him to the project.
“You see sites like this pretty infrequently,” Robbins says. “I’ve built mountain courses in this country and around the world in places like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. And this place is unique, different than all of them.”
Like Robbins, general manager and director of golf John Spiess was drawn to Canyon Ridge by its natural beauty.
“First and foremost, the views are stunning,” Spiess says. “As you play the golf course–I don’t know what the right word is–the experience is exhilarating, breathtaking. I always felt like golf was an experience out there for four hours. To be in nature. I feel like this is one of those places.”
The homes at Canyon Ridge run the gamut from $250,000 townhouses to $1 million-plus brow homes that feature amazing views. Amenities include a fitness center and family center, swimming pool, and tennis courts. And there’s plenty to see and do in nearby Chattanooga, including the Tennessee Aquarium, IMAX Theater, and the more traditional Rock City and Ruby Falls. The city was a key battleground in the Civil War and is thus a haven for history buffs.
Chris Dortch lives in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and has covered the Tennessee golf scene for 30 years.
